Yard Work Rescue

Okay I don’t normally do this kind of thing but since the number one philosophy of Minute Movement is ‘Make Your Minutes Matter’ I just have to share this tip that has made me a happy and more productive girl.

Our city offers free leaf and brush pick up twice a year and tomorrow is our day, so I have been frantically working on my spring yard clean-up this week.

We have three lovely sweet gum trees on or near our property lot which means that in addition to raking leaves all fall and winter (and spring), I have two opportunities to gather these awful spiny balls from the yard, sidewalk, and street (saving my neighbors and family from potential broken ankles).

Every time I do yard work I struggle with keeping the bag upright and open long enough for me to shovel the debris inside – and that’s just on the calm days, windy days are almost impossible! I have purchased several tools meant to help keep the bags up and open but none of them have satisfied me.

Until…

Last fall I ran across this ‘Yard Waste Bag Funnel’ by Leaf Mate and I am in LOVE! The funnel is collapsible for easy storage (I’m big on easy storage / space saving) but it opens in seconds by unfastening two clips.

When it’s open you just flip it over and slide your paper bag on (upside down).

Then flip it over and it funnels everything right into the bag – easy as pie! It’s made the extensive yard work I have around here so much more enjoyable (and quicker), I might even grab another one for Coach Wright 🙂 – then we can get the work done twice as fast and get on to other ways to Make OUR Minutes Matter!

Are you strong enough?

Are you strong enough?

It’s easy to look at the people whom we deem ‘successful’ and assume that they are better than us in some way.

They had a better upbringing, their school was superior, they were blessed with perfect genes – or good hair. Maybe those people really do have some natural advantage. I know that I could never be a brain surgeon, I don’t have the aptitude for a variety of reasons (I’m squeamish). But it’s really what these people have done with their natural gifts that gets our attention.

Today’s quote is from Arnold Schwarzenegger; an immigrant born to a working class family in Austria. He chose to follow his heart and pursue a career in bodybuilding despite lack of support from his parents. Despite these odds, Mr. Schwarzenegger made quite a career for himself- he has won several bodybuilding awards,  written books and articles about bodybuilding, owned gyms, become a Hollywood film icon, and two time Governor of California. Those things didn’t just happen for him. Maybe Mr. Schwarzenegger would have been an amazing person without working his butt off every single day but I highly doubt it. He developed his strength (literally and probably figuratively as well) through hard work and perseverance.

Don’t be afraid of the difficulties Don’t be afraid of the work. And NEVER assume that you aren’t strong enough. You just might be amazed at what you accomplish if you don’t give up!

The amazing Noah

Sergeant Noah Galloway is an inspiration. “Just three months in to his second tour of duty, he experienced a life changing injury. On December 19, 2005, Galloway lost his left arm above the elbow and left leg above the knee in an Improvised Explosive Device attack. He was transported to Germany to receive medical treatment, remaining unconscious for five days,” Now he is on Dancing with the Stars.

New Beginnings

New Beginnings

Last week I asked what you like most about spring. The thing that I enjoy the most about spring is watching the plants and flowers emerge. I can’t get a decent lawn to grow in my yard so I’ve resorted to lots of flower and vegetable beds instead. Sometimes I forget what I’ve planted in various places so every spring I walk around my yard giddy with the  excitement of greeting long lost friends.   I think what I really like best about spring is that it’s a time of new beginnings and possibility. Somehow in the spring I feel like there’s still plenty of time to get everything done that I want to do this year, that I can accomplish anything. No more dark dreary winter days cooped up in the office, now I can exercise more, experience the sun on my skin, and play in the dirt!

White peonies are one of my favorite flowers and I received several plants from my grandmother’s garden shortly before she passed away. Last spring the plants came up and they were beautiful and full – but there wasn’t one single flower on those bushes. Now, I know from experience that it can take a couple of years for a plant to bloom after they’ve been planted so I wasn’t terribly concerned. But this year, as I watch the little shoots pushing out of the dirt again I became curious WHY the flowers take so long to grace my garden. Flowers require a large amount of energy from a plant and new plants will often conserve that energy in order to develop a strong root system during the first year or so of growth.

But it’s not just in my garden that I find myself a little impatient for the beauty of obvious growth. I anxiously tap my foot looking for the flowers, the results, all too often and in all areas of my life.

I know that I’m doing the work. There are green leaves everywhere. But I have to wait for the beautiful blossoms of success. And waiting can seem unbearable sometimes.

I start wondering. Did I plant a dud (is this the wrong diet)? Is my ground fertile enough (do I need more supplements)? Is there enough sun – or shade (should I exercise more or do I need more sleep)? Did I forget to water my plant enough (how many glasses did I drink today)? Those questions are important  because sometimes the conditions aren’t optimal for growth. Maybe you need to tweak your diet a little bit, maybe you need to get more sleep, or drink some water, maybe you need to stop eating after the kids go to bed. Maybe you need to push yourself a little more when you do a Minute Movement. Whatever it is, if  there is something that you know you need then choose to take action now. You don’t have to wait until January to make adjustments to your life.

What if you really are doing everything right?

Then that’s when you have to be careful not to lose heart. Don’t dig up your plant and throw it in the compost heap. It’s those times while the plant (or the program) is working – while we are working – to create something beautiful that we have to have patience and faith that the changes will come and that they will be amazing.
